Let's Get Active - You Can Do It!
Approximately 500 participants converged in the Battlefords for the 2016 SSFA Provincial 55+ Games. The spirit of competition was high and role modelling of older adults fully engaged and active was inspirational. The three day event themed “Live Long – Live Strong”, determined the 151 participants that would represent Saskatchewan at the Canada 55+ Games in Brampton, Ontario on August 16 to 19. Saskatoon SSFA District took the lead in the most medals won.
Those participating in the Canada 55+ Games ranged in age from 55 to well into their 90s. This year the eldest female was from Rosetown, Sk. Edna Foster, 97, who won Gold in the bowling singles at the Canada Games and Silver in the Provincial Games. Paul Hack, 90, from Saskatoon won a bronze medal for bowling singles at both games. Being active is a choice! Let’s all follow their example and continue to participate in an event of your choice!
Art Battiste (Saskatoon) and Gillian Gracie (Air Ronge) were chosen to lead Team Saskatchewan as flag bearers in the Athletes parade into the opening ceremony.
Congratulations to everyone! Saskatchewan won 36 gold, 21 silver and 9 bronze for a total of 66 medals, ranking 3th in medals won.
SPIRIT OF THE GAMES AWARD was won by Saskatchewan for the second time. This award is presented to the member Province/Territory which demonstrates the spirit of the Games through positive attitude, interaction and good sportsmanship.
